Abstract

Needed research inro the problem of increasing Native Americans' underparticipation and underachievement in mathematics can be directed at (a) raismg expectations for performance, (b) devising culturally based programs, and (c) improving pedagogy. To raise expectations, possible modifications of intervention programs using videotapes, conferences, and workshops arc proposed. Culturally based curricula need to consider intertribe differences that raise important research questions. Pedagogical reform suggests investigating an applications-oriented approach and the use of computer-assisted instruction. Community input is needed in all research and development activity.
