Abstract
Background More than 200 drug-related deaths occur in Austria every year. Despite multifarious addiction treatment programs, drug-related mortality has increased. In many cases the cause of death remains obscure. It is an ethical responsibility to avoid drug deaths; therefore it is required to identify the main causes and risk factors of drug related deaths.
