Abstract

SUMMARY Environmental information must be sufficiently interesting to capture readers' attention and to encourage them to make the effort to understand the material. This study evaluated educational brochures with respect to increasing participants' interest. Brochures with headings, clear textual connections, explicit descriptions of appropriate behaviour and concrete words were most useful for increasing respondents' perceptions of how interesting the text was, but did not appear to influence whether they read or shared or had similar involvements with their brochure. In addition, visual and other features of brochures may influence interest. Brochures with features such as a booklet layout, keys and photographs produced results that suggest these features may either enhance or hinder interest.
