Abstract

The benefits of breast milk and colostrum are well recognized. In the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), breast milk offers protection against morbidities, promotes feeding tolerance and cognitive development. Despite strong evidence supporting the use of breast milk, neonates admitted to the NICU are often discharged home on infant formula. Maternal separation from her infant and preterm delivery are likely significant barriers to discharging home on breast milk.
