Abstract

Tracing back to the 1600s, the United States has passed legislation and created systems to support veterans returning to civilian life after service. Beginning with offering services for disabled veterans returning from war with the Pequot Indians in 1636, support expanded rapidly to include comprehensive health care coverage for all injuries and diseases, regardless of their connection to time in service ( U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, n.d U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs History: Department of Veterans Affairs. http://www.va.gov/about_va/vahistory.asp Google Scholar ) The Veterans Health Administration (VHA), operating under the VA is now the largest health care system in the nation, composed of 152 hospitals, 800 community-based outpatient clinics, 126 nursing home care units, and 35 domicillaries. The system oversees the delivery of care for more than 9 million veterans and does so with the employment of over 300,000 health care professionals (VA, n.d.)
