Abstract

A cluster of several atherogenic risk factors, visceral fat accumulation was more increased in gout patients. In addition, visceral fat was more accumulated in gout patients who were overexcreters of uric acid than in those who were underexcreters. Based on these results, gout patients, especially uric acid overexcreters who have more visceral fat accumulation and a high incidence of visceral fat obesity, are likely to be vulnerable to atherosclerotic diseases. However, a prospective study on the development of atherosclerotic diseases in gout patients, separately examining the two types, would be of great benefit to determine the certainty of this conclusion.
