Abstract

Concerns about rising carbon dioxide levels and increasing electricity rates are spurring renewed interest in how U.S. utilizes its energy supplies and new analyses of how the country can best handle energy issues in the future. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists concludes that increased use of renewable energy sources is the solution to the global warming problem. The study is discussed in this paper. One of his principal conclusions is that the U.S. could replace half its energy use with solar, wind, and biomass energy sources by the year 2020. Brower argues that despite steadily declining government support for research and development, the costs of solar and wind energy sources are just about comparable to those for new fossil energy power plants. to push these renewable technologies into commercial reality will take a new federal government commitment to research and use.
