Abstract

This prospective cohort study from Finland investigated the risk of stroke, ischemic stroke only, and hemorrhagic stroke only in relation to alcohol drinking patterns to assess the relationship between a binge-drinking pattern and stroke. The 10-year period of study yielded a random sample of 15,965 survey participants with ages ranging 24–64 years. This group was stratified by gender and age group, with an average survey response rate of 76% over the 10-year period. Cox proportional-hazards models allowed the investigators to assess the independent contribution of a binge-drinking pattern to the risk of stroke independent of the influence of known cerebrovascular disease risk factors.
