Increased Metaphor Production in Open-Ended Speech Samples of Patients With Prodromal and Developed Schizophrenia Detected with NLP

Abstract

Natural Language Processing (NLP) studies show language disturbance in schizophrenia and clinical high risk (CHR) patients, including decreases in coherence and complexity. As prior clinical rating studies show increased metaphor use in schizophrenia, we applied automated metaphor detection to transcribed speech in schizophrenia and its risk states, expecting increased metaphor use.
