Abstract

Recent findings suggest that levels of self-esteem can be enhanced using a direct persuasive message presented by videotape This study examined the effect of counselor credibility and style on the effectiveness of such presentations Sixty undergraduate students were randomly assigned to one of four conditions representing high and low levels of counselor expertise and aggressive or nonaggressive style All treatments involved a videotaped counterattitudinal message encouraging subjects to think more positively about themselves Results indicated that both expertise and aggressive presentation, when operating independently, led to high posttreatment levels of esteem. When levels of both variables were high, however, they were not effective Implications for adapting attitude change techniques for clinical settings are considered
