Abstract

Pigment mutant C-2A′ of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus obliquus synthesizes protochlorophyllide and protochlorophyll in darkness. Both precursors are rapidly reduced on exposure to light to chlorophyllide and chlorophyll respectively. Formation of reaction centre proteins and development of photosystem II reaction centre activity also occur immediately on exposure to light. This indicates that the chlorophyll which is rapidly formed from protochlorophyll is incorporated in the reaction centres of the photosynthetic apparatus.
