Abstract

A new approach to linking uncertainties due to climate and soil properties is described for the design of agricultural subsurface drainage systems. The climatic uncertainty is incorporated by using a first-order finite-state Markov chain model. The uncertainty in soil properties is considered by the first and second order analyses of uncertainty. The methods are briefly explained and an example is given that shows how by linking uncertainties the proposed method can be used to develop individualized designs, taking into account the amount of risk a particular farmer is willing to accept in his farming enterprise.
