Abstract

This article highlights interpersonal aspects of panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) and discusses some family dynamics implicated in the creation and maintenance of panic symptomatology. A case of complex PDA is presented to demonstrate Panic Control Treatment and the integration of family therapy approaches. Treatment techniques included psycho-education, breathing retraining, cognitive restructuring, interoceptive exposure, in vivo exposure and discussion of secondary gains and family dynamics. The importance of a flexible approach to treatment of PDA using multidimensional techniques is emphasized.
