Abstract

Various facets of the subject of electro-optics are described and ways in which the fundamental concepts of this field may be incorporated into an undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum are suggested. The topics considered to be fundamental material are: (1) the nature of the photon, (2) black body radiation, (3) the electromagnetic spectrum, (4) basic geometrical optics, (5) basic physical optics, (6) optical detection, (7) basic concepts of laser operation, (8) propagation of light in free space and optical waveguides, (9) linear and nonlinear electrooptic effects, (10) linear electro-optical system analysis, (11) basic principles of holography, (12) optical materials, and (13) fundamental principles of optical signal processing. The approach suggested to incorporate electro-optics into an undergraduate electrical engineering curriculum is to modify the required core courses to illustrate fundamental principles with optical examples. >
