Abstract

Gerontology has become a recognized area of study. Since 1982 four postgraduate gerontology programs have been developed by Australian tertiary institutions. This article addresses issues associated with developing a gerontology program by examining the rationale, aims, and content of the graduate diploma in gerontology offered in the Lincoln School of Health Sciences at La Trobe University, the characteristics of students in the course, and the influence of the course on their career advancement. The paper proposes the development of a national data base, similar to that compiled by the American Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, as a resource for further development in gerontological education.
