Abstract

Continence issues and incontinence is prevalent within the UK with an estimated 14 million adults affected by urinary incontinence ( Bladder and Bowel Community, 2015 ) and over 6.5 million adults suffering with bowel control problems ( NHS England, 2015 ). This article will identify potential risk factors for incontinence; identify the different types of incontinence; outline what a comprehensive continence assessment should include; and outline the potential, and mostly preventable, complications that can occur due to incontinence.
