Abstract

George Campbell's Philosophy of Rhetoric is an integration of eighteenth‐century psychological and philosophical thought with classical rhetorical concepts. This integration, however, contains a methodological‐epistemological inconsistency. Campbell advocated verification through observation but also accepted the Common Sense dictum that people possess the certainty of original knowledge. Analysis and explanation of the inconsistency reveal important implications for current‐day theorizing about communication.
