Abstract
Studies of inter-religious theological mentalities in the Catholic church on the basis of school textbooks has been a blind spot in Catholic theological and educational history. One either ended up with general assumptions where claims were not based on concrete empirical research on the school textbooks from before Vatican II, or else one got no further than a superficial analysis of a very limited sample (2 or 3) of textbooks. We made a first attempt at a consistent definition of the relationship between the underlying Christian/Catholic inter-religious theological paradigm and the image of Islam that is presented in Belgian religion textbooks in Catholic primary and secondary education (1886-1961). This research provided some surprising results: the dominant inter-religious paradigm turned out not to be exclusivistic but inclusivistic in nature. In this article we will explore the details of this inclusivistic mindset.
