Abstract

Results: 48 patients (35 males/13 females) with an average age of 58 years received IMRT,8 with palliative intent. The majority of patients were staged at T4N2b disease. Simultaneous chemotherapy was given in 23 cases usually with cisplatin, 5FU or TPF. Total treatment dose ranged between 10-24 Grays in 5 fractions for palliative patients and 60 Grays in 30 fractions for patients treated with curative intent. Complications associated with IMRT included grade 2 mucositis (8), grade 2 skin reaction (3), grade 2 dysphagia (6), grade 3 mucositis (10),hypoacusis (5) trismus (2) and xerostomia (4).15 patients required inpatient admission for the management of their grade 3 mucositis and dehydration. Discussion: Surgery followed by post operative IMRT in patients with substantial risk of recurrence resulted in high loco-regional tumour control rates and decreased incidence of xerostomia.
