Incidence of Heterobasidion annosum Basidiocarps on Two Low-Hazard Florida Soils After Clearcutting and Site Preparation

Abstract

Abstract A survey for the incidence of Heterobasidion annosum basidiocarps among residual slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii) stumps revealed frequent occurrence of the fungus 18 months after clearcutting in sites considered low hazard for the fungus. Although the percentage of infected stumps was high, the fungus was not isolated from dead or dying seedlings 18 months after planting. Further risk of stump infection may be reduced by thinning or clearcutting slash pine on low-hazard sites in the summer.
