Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia that is associated with a risk of stroke up to 5 times that of the general population. It is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and cost to the healthcare system. The use of oral anticoagulation (OAC) can significantly diminish the risk of stroke in patients with AF. Numerous electrocardiograms (ECGs) are performed daily in tertiary care centres, some of which demonstrate AF. Of these ECGs, a number demonstrate “actionable” AF, a clinical entity in which there is an opportunity for the use of OAC according to Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) guidelines. Our study seeks to evaluate the incidence of actionable AF on ECGs performed in tertiary care centres in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, as well as outcomes relating to OAC uptake in these patients.
