Abstract

Judges from Asia have made important contributions and many have taken on the highest offices at the International Court of Justice. In 1970, Judge Zafrulla Khan of Pakistan became the first Asian President of the Court. Since that time, there has been President Nagendra Singh of India, Vice-President Oda of Japan, and Vice-President Weeramantry of Sri Lanka. Asian judges have also been making major contributions to the work of other international judicial institutions such as international tribunals. Beyond the realm of international adjudication, Asian states have become ever more significant players in the wider world of international law in terms of treaty-making and the refinement of custom. One of the objectives of the Asian Society of International Law is to provide a forum for younger international lawyers in Asia for intellectual interaction in the field of research and practice in international law. Other legal areas where Asia has been making an impact include the law of the sea, international trade and investment law, human rights law, and law on terrorism.
