Abstract
ABSTRACT A 65-year-old deaf mute presented with clinical and laboratory evidence of ascorbic acid deficiency. He responded promptly to vitamin C administration, but adrenal cortical function tests revealed a complete lack of adrenal reserve. After being lost to follow-up for over a year, repeat adrenal evaluation again revealed normal baseline corticosteroid levels but no response to ACTH. Although no specific complaints could be elicited prior to therapy, hydrocortisone treatment resulted in an improvement in his clinical status.
