Abstract

Inaccuracies in hospital coding are well known to occur in UK hospitals despite the presence of Coding departments to help facilitate accurate transcription of clinical information to hospital coding databases. Accurate clinical coding is essential to ensure UK NHS Trusts are fairly paid by their respective Primary Care Trust. In addition, accuracy is essential to facilitate clinical research and audit and also to accurately reflect a consultant's surgical workload.
