Abstract
During the past several years, interest in the chemical serodiagnosis of cancer has been revived by the introduction of several new procedures. Among these have been the methylene blue reduction time,1the heat turbidity index,2the Huggins iodoacetic acid index,3and the level of the mucoprotein fraction in blood.4Although none of the originators of these tests claimed them to be specific for the diagnosis of malignant disease, the suggestion has been made that some of these tests would be a definite aid in cancer diagnosis. The early evaluations of some of these tests indicated that they were fairly accurate. More recent studies on two of these procedures, however, have been rather discouraging.5It has been suggested that a battery of tests might prove to be more accurate than any one of its component parts.
