Abstract

Among young people in Zimbabwe the risk of HIV infection rises with the cumulative number of sexual partners and decreases with rising age at first intercourse. In addition the risk of infection is six times as high among women as it is among men of the same age. Data from more than 4400 men and women aged 15-24 indicate that the tendency of young women to have older partners--who are more likely to be infected--is a major factor in this differential.
