Abstract

1. 1. Liver and adipose tissue were the major sites of rabbit fatty acid synthesis from radioactive glucose or acetate. 2. 2. The relative importance of liver and adipose tissue in lipogenesis shifted upon maturing. In growing rabbits the liver accounted for approximately two-thirds of total fatty acid synthesis while in mature rabbits the adipose tissue accounted for approximately two-thirds. 3. 3. A comparison of the different adipose tissue depots indicated that the internal depots (perirenal and mesenteric) contributed a greater percentage of total lipogenesis than the subcutaneous adipose tissue depot in growing rabbits, while in mature rabbits the reverse was true.
