Abstract

A nontoxic, long-lasting dye that is readily incorporated into the cells of specific tissues is of potential value for the determination of the origin of cells from primary tissue cultures. As Calco Oil Red N-17002 (American Cyanamid Co., Bound Brook, N. J.) is non-toxic and persists in the adult after incorporation in the larval diet of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis Boheman (Gast and Landin 1966), a study was undertaken to determine the effect of this dye on the vitality of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L.), and to determine if it might provide a means for the differentiation of specific tissues.
