Abstract

It has been established in earlier studies that parathyroid hormone in vitro markedly alters rat kidney and liver mitochondrial respiration, phosphorylation, ATP'ase activity and ion transport. It has also been shown previously in rabbits that kidney mitochondrial respiration and phosphorylation was inhibited 12-24 hr following administration of the hormone in vivo. The relevance of these changes, however, to the physiological action of parathyroid hormone on kidney function has not been established. In order to learn if a para thy roidmitochondrial relationship does exist, several measures of mitochondrial function were made on kidney tissue obtained from rats with differing levels in vivo of parathyroid hormone after relatively short periods of treatment. Groups of rats were prepared as follows: (a) Sham, (b) sham -j-hormone, (c) parathyroidectomized, and (d) parathyroidectomized +hormone. The animals were killed 2-3.5 hr after treatment and kidney mitochondria were prepared. Measurement was made of res...
