Abstract

Aims: Pancreatic islets have been shown to initially increase function and mass during the development of obesity and insulin resistance (IR), but to fail later under the metabolic pressure. However, the kinetics of transition from successful islet compensation to islet dysfunction is largely unknown. Here, we aimed to longitudinally assess the adaptation of islet cell mass and function during obesity induced IR in vivo in relationship to the existing metabolic status.
