Abstract

Objective Vitex negundo L. (verbenaceae), is a large aromatic shrub with various medicinal properties. This current work has been proposed to explore antioxidant property of methanolic extract of Vitex negundo by various in vitro assays. Methods. The in vitro antioxidant action has been determined via DPPH assay, Nitric oxide scavenging activity, and by assessing reducing power. Results Methanolic extract of Vitex negundo showed a very good anti-radical activity in scavenging DPPH radical with maximum % inhibition of 81.87±1.53% at 2000µg/0.1 ml concentration and nitric oxide radical with maximum % inhibition of 75.29±1.33% at 2000µg/ml. Reducing power of Vitexnegundois83.75±0.57% at 2000µg/0.05 ml concentration. Adding on, methanolic extract of Vitex negundo also showed significant anti-inflammatory activity with maximum % inhibition of 79.81 at 500ug. Conclusion Taken together the result shows that methanolic extract of Vitex negundo possesses substantial free radical scavenging action and anti-inflammatory properties. Hence more research is warranted for ascertaining the effective compound contributing towards its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
