Abstract

Rapid propagation of Nephrolepis cordifolia was achieved by means of runner tip culture in vitro. Runner tips produced green globular bodies (GGB) when quarter-strength Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 0.5 mg 1 −1 of benzylaminopurine (BA) was used. GGB easily regenerated plantlets by culturing on BA-free medium, and GGB were rapidly multiplied on BA medium. The multiplication rates were 4–41 times per month expressed as increment of fresh weight, depending on the size of the segment for sub-culture. Consequently, using GGB for the multiplication stage, 160 000 plantlets could be obtained from one runner tip in 6 months.
