Abstract

Purpose: Mechanical interactions between a contact lens and ocular tissue can result in damage to corneal epithelial tissue and may affect comfort. These mechanical interactions cannot be characterized solely by a coefficient of friction (CoF) value since the frictional force on the ocular tissue, which can be responsible for cell damage, depends on a normal force that will be a function of several variables; such as the upper eyelid pressure, lens design, and ocular surface shape. The efforts described here were undertaken to find a tribological metric that correlates with corneal epithelial cell damage.
