Abstract

The honey-bee ( Apis mellifera L.) flight muscle and blood were found to possess a lipase which could hydrolyze tributyrin readily. The muscle homogenate was found to be capable of oxidizing butyrate, and the extent of oxidation was found to be highest during the hours when the bee is most active.
