Abstract

The liver is a vital organ that functions as a focal point of metabolism and detoxification. Generally liver damage can be induced by biological factors, autoimmune diseases, action of different chemicals, such as drugs and toxic compounds, excessive consumption of alcohol and malnutrition. According to the estimate, more than 700 mono or poly-herbal preparations in the form of decoction, tincture, tablets and capsules are in clinical use as hepatoprotective. The various extracts of recently identified plant, Lindernia madayiparense were assessed for the invitro hepatoprotective activity at the first time on CCl4 induced hepatotoxic Human Liver cell lines (HEpG-2 cell line) by MTT assay method. The results revealed that CCl4 intoxicated human cell lines treated with ethanol extract showed the significant % viability (55.57%) followed by decocted extract (53.68%) in a dose dependent manner and compared to standard, Silymarin.
