Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings on Ni and Ti base alloys substrates were plasma sprayed. Though these coatings offer a lot of advantages, many studies have reported the instability of HAp-metallic interface; in time, the HAp coating is resorbable by the body fluids. In order to enhance the coating adhesion on the substrate, two experimental types of coatings were realized: (i) pure HAp coatings; (ii) composite coatings containing an intermediate Al 2 O 3 layer and a HAp with 10% Al 2 O 3 final layer As coated samples were deepen up to 3 weeks in a laboratory prepared simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. By SEM and TEM observation one, were studied the coatings morphology and microstructure, before and after immersion in SBF solution. It was found that the experimental coatings exhibit a bioactive behavior due to a crystalline thin film, corresponding to HAp in composition and structure, that has grown on their surface.
