Abstract

Plants belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family were found to be widely used in traditional practice for many diseases among the plants of Euphorbiaceae family, Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. is common and abundantly available in south India, traditionally used for treating respiratory infections, as an oil mixture in inflammatory conditions, milky juice is mixed with oil for skin diseases, fish poisoning, to remove warts and horns in foots, and for tumor. Since there is no scientific reports found in the literature for the plant Euphorbia nivulia and only few scientific reports were found in the literature for the plant and invitro anti cancer activity to confirm their traditional claim. Chemical investigation of Euphorbia nivulia led to the identify the flavonoids quercetin and apigenin were present in methanol extract by HPTLC Technique along with standard marker for the first time from aerial part of the plant. In vitro cytotoxicity in three cell lines namely human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa), Human Breast Cancer cell lines(MCF-7) and primary mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH 3T3), IC 50 value found to be135.5 µg/ml, 99.63 µg/ml and 118.1 µg/ml respectively. So we conclude that methanol extract of Euphorbia nivulia produces invitro anti-cancer activity. Thus the present study provided a scientific validation for the traditional claims of Euphorbia nivulia revealed the presence flavonoids quercetin and apigenin in methanol extract of Euphorbia nivulia .
