Abstract

Background: Abnormalities of the muscularis propria occur in various diseases such as GI stromal tumors, achalasia and an array of GI motility disorders. Currently, muscle layer histological sampling and analysis is requisite for diagnosing neoplasias. Muscle layer diseases, especially motility disorders, are rarely associated with mortality or the need for surgical procedures. Muscle layer tissue acquisition for these clinical disorders is therefore difficult for both diagnosis and research. A minimally invasive repeatable endoscopic procedure for histological imaging of the muscularis propria is desirable.
