In our very first issue as editors, we indicated several themes that we felt were especially pressing and promising for the field of Latin American history, including the study of the African diaspora and African culture beyond the usual locations and contexts. We are pleased to report that we have received a steady stream of articles that addressed this theme, many of them creative in their use of sources and innovative in their interpretations, including the three articles published in this issue.In “ ‘A Lack of Legitimate Obedience and Respect’: Slaves and Their Masters in the Courts of Late Colonial Buenos Aires,” Lyman Johnson reminds us that “slaves were everywhere”...
