Abstract

The year 2016 marked the 50th anniversary of American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA). What can be learned from the lives of the women who led the association from its origins to the present? Drawing from personal recollections of the association’s past presidents, this article traces the history of the ADTA, the development of the profession, and the unique personal journeys and contributions of the women who served as president. Each living president was invited to reflect on her roots as a dance/movement therapist, her preparation for the presidency, and the trajectory of her time in office. In addition, posthumous and supplemental reflections were gathered through historical documents and publications. The article concludes with reflections from the presidents on the present and future of dance/movement therapy and the ADTA.
