Abstract

Be resolved that, in terminally ill people, a wish to die is a manifestation of depression and should be treated accordingly. I am not sure how one could argue otherwise. The Canadian Hospice and Palliative Care Association's document A Model to Guide Hospice Palliative Care [1] notes that hospice palliative care strives to help patients and families address physical, psychological, social, spiritual and practical issues, and their associated expectations, needs, hopes and fears. I propose that appropriately addressing the needs of an individual desiring early death includes assessment of depression as a root cause of this expressed desire. Of course, physical, social, spiritual and existential issues will probably also play a critical role.
