Abstract

During the past three decades, measurement of aptitudes and achieve ment has progressed from simple and crude to relatively refined measures. This progress has been marked by the invention of new techniques and the improvement of old techniques. Not only have contributions been made in various methods of test construction, but also, in the analysis, definition, and clarification of the basic components or characteristics that comprise specific aptitudes and achievements. In its early stages, measurement of achievement was centered mainly upon the appraisal of information and skills. More recently, the definition of achievement has been expanded by the addition of such objectives as work study skills and critical thinking. In statistical treatment and interpretation of test results?for example, in reliability, norms and factor analysis?new advances have been made by research. In all aspects of measurement, no fixed or final answers have been found. New problems in the measurement of aptitude and achievement await solution by skillful and imaginative workers.
