Abstract

During the Second World War the east coast port of Hull was subjected to repeated enemy attack from the air. The library of University College, Hull, was under constant threat of damage, and its rare books and manuscripts had to be moved elsewhere. The library itself naturally had to contend with financial restraint and staff shortages during a particularly difficult and dangerous period. That the library was able to keep operating, even though much of its stock had been dispersed, was due to the determination and endeavour of its Librarian, Agnes Cuming.
