Abstract

ABSTRACTThis is a review of the literature that covers both American retail and American labor history, particularly focusing on the work of authors Susan Porter Benson, Nelson Lichtenstein, Peter Ikeler, Minna Ziskind, and Traci Parker. It argues that Lichtenstein, Ikeler, Ziskind, and Parker all drew upon Benson’s insight that retail and labor history have important intersections, and that by engaging with Benson’s work, all four historians made major contributions to our understanding of both disciplines.
