Abstract
This chapter tracks the history of the Ohio State Reformatory through extensive interviews with current OSR historians and personnel and in mission statements from former superintendents. There are also many surviving inmate documents, such as letters and diaries, that attest to the humanity and power of endurance that early OSR prisoners summoned during their incarcerations; certainly a major reason for Shawshank Redemption’s popularity is its ability to inspire similar hope in the midst of an inhumane penal environment.
