Abstract

While I was physical sciences editor at Nature in the mid-1980s, I proposed to its publishers an initiative targeted at the physics community. I could see journalistic and commercial potential a big advertising market, in particular. At the time, it turned out, Macmillan had other fish to fry. Soon afterwards, I was quite attracted by an advertisement from Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP) for a publisher, but did not apply. As it happened, a certain Mark Ware got the job and, not long afterwards, placed an advertisement for an editor for a new physics magazine that the IOPP had dreamt up. I applied, and ended up working with Mark, who was to be my publisher throughout my seven years at IOPP.
