Abstract

Students, both male and female, but particularly female, are dropping out of mathematics courses in high school, severely limiting their future career options. The lack of interest and ability in mathematics has roots which reach back to the early years of a child's life. The details of the problems are outlined, and activities that could solve the problem are suggested. Female children should have the same encouragement as males. Children should be involved in the use of mathematics in daily life. Parent-teacher interaction in mathematics is emphasized. It is suggested that schools invite guest speakers in mathematics who could function as role models. Print and visual media should be monitored, with emphasis on scientific topics. >
