Abstract

A simultaneous nitrogen and dissolved oxygen mass balancing technique is used to accurately assess actual in-stream nitrification rate coefficients. These rate coefficients are compared against estimations from observed spatial changes in various bulk fluid nitrogen species concentrations. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen change was found to be the most accurate predictor of in-stream nitrification. Proposed nitrification rate coefficient estimation functions have r 2 values in excess of 0.90.
