Abstract
In situ investigation experiments were performed with a high-temperature optical microscope on the (0 1 0) surface of Sm211 single crystal whisker with Ba–Cu–O flux. A needle-shaped high-temperature phase was observed at 1100 °C, which may be an Sm242 phase. At peritectic temperature 1050 °C, the Sm123 phase formed and showed two epitaxial relations on the Sm211 whisker: [0 0 1]Sm211∥[1 0 0]Sm123 and [0 0 1]Sm211∥[1 1 0]Sm123. Sm123 island grains and equilateral triangle phases were observed on the surface of the Sm123, which epitaxially grew on the Sm211 whisker.
