Abstract

ABSTRACT Micro-frac, Mini-frac and Leak-off test records from 41 wells on and around the Peace River Arch give indications of the magnitudes of SHmin, the smaller horizontal principal stress. The magnitudes at constant depth appear to be laterally variable, with a tendency to be larger in the western part of the area. SHmin magnitudes suggest that the eastern part of the area is subject to an extensional stress regime where SV > SHmax > SHmin. To the west, the stress regime is compressional with SHmax > SV > SHmin. If this interpretation is correct, a first order implication is that fluids contained in low permeability reservoirs could be underpressured. This may account for the sub-hydrostatic pressures in the Deep Basin. Breakout orientations measured in 38 wells in northern Alberta and British Columbia show that the principal horizontal stresses are deflected over the Peace River Arch. Instead of the regional northeast-southwest azimuth for SHmax, the larger horizontal principal stress is directed north-northeast-south-southwest. In a previous study, two-dimensional finite element modelling of this stress refraction has shown that the cause could be lateral heterogeneity in the elastic properties of the rocks. Whatever the reason, the deflection is real and suggests that induced hydraulic fractures will be vertical and trend north-northeast-south-southwest over much of the Peace River Arch.
